What is the Nautical Skills Competition?

The Nautical Skills Competition, hosted by the Company of Master Mariners of Canada (NL Division), in collaboration with the Marine Institute, is a series of challenging exercises designed not only to test knowledge and ability but also to develop leadership skills and confidence. Directed toward Nautical Science students, this competition looks to promote the maritime sector, encourage team building and professionalism, and foster a culture of safety. By participating in the event, students will network with some of this region’s most experienced Mariners, interact with fellow cadets, and put their education to the test in a pursuit for top prize and their name on the Captain Jim Thorpe trophy.

Who is the Company of Master Mariners of Canada (CMMC)?

The Company of Master Mariners of Canada (CMMC) is a professional association for those qualified to command. It is a not-for-profit organization established to encourage and maintain high and honourable standards within the nautical profession, to further the efficiency of the Sea Service, and to uphold the status, dignity, and prestige of the marine profession.

Competition Rules:

Team participants will be randomly chosen and divided into 5 teams with a mix of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students. Teams will be publicly drawn in Hampton Hall on Feb. 1st, 2012 and the team lists will be posted on the CMMC website following the draw. It will be the responsibility of the students to locate and organize their team members.  Each team will be required to compete in 5 different exercises, which comprise the following marine-related areas:

  • 1. Dynamic Positioning
  • 2. Seamanship
  • 3. Cargo Work
  • 4. Shiphandling
  • 5. Navigation

Each exercise will be 45 minutes in duration. At the start of each exercise each team will be required to present a 1-2 minute Safety Moment (presentation, skit, song, poem, etc.) that illustrates to the judges how the team will incorporate safety into their exercise tasks. Marks will be awarded for creativity.

The day before the competition there will be a 3-hour briefing and review of the exercises and any equipment or simulators that will be used.

Preparation Material:

As some of the nautical skills may be new to some of the student participants (especially 1st year students), preparation material for each exercise will be provided approx. 3 weeks prior to the competition. This information will be directly related to the tasks that the participants would be expected to know and perform and will be available on the CMMC (NL Division) website on February 1st, 2012.
