Master Mariners of Canada

Merchant Navy Remembrance Day – Canada

In 2003, the Government of Canada proclaimed 3 September as the day on which we would remember the sacrifices made by members of the Canadian Merchant Marine during the hostilities in WW I and WW II.

It is not well known that the Canadian Merchant Navy suffered the highest casualty rates (per capita) of any of the Canadian armed services during WW II.

Rear Admiral Leonard W. Murray reported:

The Battle of the Atlantic was not won by any Navy or any Air Force, it was won by the courage, fortitude and determination of the British and Allied Merchant Navy.[2]
